Telus Customers Now Get Full Cell Service from Sooke to Port Renfrew

Connectivity Expands Across Vancouver Island’s West Coast

Travelers and locals alike can now stay connected along one of Vancouver Island’s most scenic routes. Telus and Koodo have officially extended cell service from Sooke to Port Renfrew, bringing coverage to the once-silent 70-kilometre stretch of Highway 14 — home to stunning beaches, rainforests, and remote communities.

This upgrade comes after Telus signed a roaming agreement with Rogers Communications, allowing customers to connect automatically to Rogers’ newly completed network. The project includes seven new cell towers, eliminating dead zones and ensuring reliable voice, text, and data service from Sooke to Port Renfrew.

What This Means for Locals and Visitors

For years, Port Renfrew and surrounding areas like Sombrio Beach, Botanical Beach, and Avatar Grove were known not only for their natural beauty but also for being off-grid. While that isolation was part of the charm, it posed challenges for emergency access, travelers, and local businesses relying on connectivity.

Now, visitors can safely navigate the Pacific Marine Circle Route, access maps in real time, and share their adventures instantly — all while supporting tourism growth and local development in Port Renfrew, BC.

Details of the Network Expansion

The $5.7 million project, funded by the Province of British Columbia and Rogers Communications, was completed earlier this year. Initially, only Rogers customers had access, but as of October 2023, Telus and Koodo users now join the network through seamless roaming.

Telus spokesperson Olivia Andolfatto shared that the company “listened to customers and understands the importance of connectivity along Highway 14,” noting that extensive field testing was done to ensure consistent performance across the rugged terrain.

What Users Can Expect

While most Telus users will experience smooth service, a few things to note:

• Calls may briefly disconnect and reconnect when entering or exiting the roaming zone.

• Web pages might require a quick refresh as the device transitions networks.

• Some short-code numbers like 411 and 811 may not function in the extended network area.

Still, for most travelers, this represents a major leap forward in accessibility, convenience, and safety along Vancouver Island’s wild west coast.
